24 year old Marquis Hill of the Patriots died in a Jet Ski accident on Lake Pontchartran in Louisiana.  Hill drowned after helping his girlfriend get to a bowie in the lake.  Neither was wearing a life jacket.  Hill played in 13 games in his NFL career and he made 3 tackles.

The New England Patriots re-sign a couple of their own free agents

The Patriots have re-signed CB Randall Gay and LB Eric Alexander to 1-year contracts.  Gay only played in 3 games last season and he made 2 tackles.  In his 3 year career (all with the Patriots), Gay has played in 23 gamesw and he has made 48 tackles, has 2 interceptions, defensed 5 passes and recovered 2 fumbles (1 for a TD).  Alexander played in 14 games last season and he made 14 tackles.  In his 3-year career (all with the Patriots), Alexander has played in 18 games and he’s made 17 tackles.  Both of these guys were signed for depth reasons and for special teams.

5. (171) Clint Oldenburg, OT

The Patriots wanted to get some depth for the offensive line and that’s why they chose Clint Oldenburg in the Draft.  Coach Belichick likes to get smart players that are willing to learn and Oldenburg fits that mold as his dad was a football coach.  He started at left tackle his last three seasons in college but he projects more as a guard in the pros.  Oldenburg stands at 6′5″, 298 pounds so he likely will be able to add some bulk to his frame as he gets acclimated to the NFL.  Look for him to likely be a backup in the NFL.  He played in 47 games at Colorado State and started 34 of them.  He was worth a 5th round pick.

The New England Patriots re-sign Junior Seau

The Patriots have re-signed Junior Seau to a 1-year contract.  Seau played pretty well for the Patriots before his season ended due to injury.  In 11 games last season, Seau had 69 tackles, 1 sack and 1 pass defensed.  The future Hall of Famer appears to still have some gas in the tank so his signing was a good move for the Patriots.

4. (127) Kareem Brown, DT

Kareem Brown was a backup player until his senior season at Miami (Fla).  He has great natural ability but he often doesn’t play 100% so he is never as good as he should be.  Look for the veterans on the Patriots defense to push Brown to be the player that he should be.  Brown stands at 6′4″ and he weighs 303 pounds so he has the size to cause trouble as long as he stays low.  In 48 games (12 starts) with the Miami (Fla) Hurricanes, Brown made 152.5 tackles, 30.5 tackles for a loss, had 18 sacks, batted down 8 passes, forced 3 fumbles and recovered 2 fumbles.  Look for Brown to fit into the D-Line rotation as a rookie for the Patriots.  If motivated, Brown could be a good grab in the 4th round for New England.
