New England Patriots vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 28 September 2007 at 3:26 pm

If you just look at the records of the teams coming into this football game you would think the Patriots would kill the Bengals……not so fast my friend!  The Bengals lost two tough games on the road but this game is in the Jungle where the kitties tend to be vicious!

The Patriots have been clicking on all cylinders on offense as they are averaging 151.7 yards rushing per game and 289.3 yards passing per game.  The Bengals defense is soft at defending both the run (145.0 yards per game) and the pass (257.7 yards per game) so the Patriots should have no problems moving the football.  Look for the Patriots to run the ball a little more this week to attempt to control the clock and keep the Bengals offense on the sidelines.  Laurence Maroney (252 yards rushing, 4.7 ypc) and Sammy Morris (151 yards rushing, 4.6 ypc, 2 TDs) will pose a serious challenge to the Front Seven of the Bengals’ defense.  Tom Brady has been remarkable this season and he will likely not have much of a problem shredding the defense of the Bengals.  WRs Randy Moss (22 rec, 403 yards, 5 TDs) and Wes Welker (20 rec, 221 yards, TD) will both have good games getting down the field against the Bengals.  But, TE Ben Watson (9 rec, 75 yards, 3 TDs) and Dontae’ Stallworth (4 rec, 64 yards) will be the secret weapons of the Patriots on Monday Night.

The Bengals would prefer to run the football this week to keep the Patriots offense off the field.  That will be easier said than done as they will be without Rudi Johnson.  Kenny Watson will step in for Johnson and he has played well this season as he has carried the ball 9 times for 60 yards (6.7 ypc) with 1 TD run.  The Patriots do have an outstanding run defense as they are only allowing 74.0 yards rushing per game and 3.4 yards per carry this year.  If the Bengals offensive line can give Carson Palmer time to throw the ball they will have success throwing the football.  WRs Chad Johnson (25 rec, 442 yards, 3 TDs) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh (29 rec, 260 yards, 4 TDs) give the Bengals one of the best pairs of receivers in the league and they will play well this Monday Night.

PREDICTION:  I have more faith in the Patriots defense’s ability to stop the Bengals on offense a couple of times.  Look for the Bengals to fight hard at home and lost by less than a TD.

New England Patriots 38, Buffalo Bills 7

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by dawgpounded on Monday 24 September 2007 at 12:33 pm

The Patriots beat the hell out of the poor Bills yesterday.  Tom Brady had another outstanding football game as he completed 23 of 29 passes for 311 yards with 4 TD passes and 0 interceptions.  RB Laurence Maroney had an excellent game with 19 carries for 103 yards (5.4 ypc).  Sammy Morris also had another solid game with 12 carries for 46 yards (3.8 ypc) with a TD run.  Kevin Faulk even got in on the beating as he carried the ball 2 times for 14 yards (7.0 ypc) and he also caught 5 passes for 38 yards (7.6 avg).  Randy Moss was outstanding again as he caught 5 passes for 115 yards (23.0 avg) with 2 more TD grabs.  Wes Welker also had another solid game as he caught 6 passes for 69 yards (11.5 avg) and he also returned 3 punts for 72 yards (24.0 avg).  Ben Watson (2 rec, 17 yards, TD) and Jabar Gaffney (2 rec, 15 yards, TD) also pitched in on Sunday.  The Patriots finished up with 177 yards rushing on 38 carries (4.7 ypc) and they also completed 23 of 29 passes for 308 yards.

The Patriots defense was excellent against the Bills.  Adalius Thomas led the way for the Patriots with 9 tackles.  They held the Bills to 110 yards rushing on 27 carries (4.1 ypc) and they completed 11 of 21 passes for 83 yards.

New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 21 September 2007 at 11:43 am

This game looks like a total mis-match on paper but it’s a division game so who knows what will happen on Sunday.  The Bills have looked awful this season as they are 0-2 and they have been outscored 41-17 this season.  The Patriots have won both of their football games by indentical 38-14 scores.  The Bills would be smart to throw the football against the Patriots as Patriots opponents have completed 65.6% of there passes.  To do that though two things must happen.  The Bills offensive line must block better as they have already allowed six sacks this season and the Patriots have already sacked opposing QBs 8 times this season.  Also, Lee Evans must play up to his ability because teams have focused on shutting him down as he has only caught 4 passes for 22 yards this season.  Roscoe Parrish (8 rec, 81 yards), Josh Reed (4 rec, 37 yards) and Peerless Price (4 rec, 31 yards) must take the pressure off Losman and Evans by also pitching in to loosen the coverage on Evans.  The Bills won’t forget rookie RB Marshawn Lynch (37 car, 154 yards, TD) who has done well running against two good defenses this season.  But, the Patriots have been awesome against the run holding opponents to 56.0 yards rushing per game and 2.9 ypc.

The Patriots will likely mix things up on offense as they are averaging 419.0 yards per game and the Bills are allowing 445.0 yards per game.  Look for the Patriots to lean on the running game more than the passing game as the Bills allow 177.5 yards rushing per game and 5.5 yards per carry.  With that in mind look for Laurence Maroney (35 car, 149 yards) and Sammy Morris (21 car, 105 yards, TD) to both find a lot of running room against the soft defense of the Bills.  Tom Brady (134.1 QB Rating) won’t be able to resist throwing the ball quite a few times against the Bills secondary which has been decimated by injury.  Randy Moss (17 rec, 288 yards, 3 TDs), Wes Welker (14 rec, 152 yards, 1 TD) and TE Ben Watson (7 rec, 58 yards, 2 TDs) will be the primary targets on offense for the Patriots but keep an eye on Donte’ Stallworth (3 rec, 38 yards) who could be the secret weapon this week.

PREDICTION:  The easy prediction would be to take the Patriots 38-14 against the Bills.  But, I don’t see the Bills scoring 14 points this week against the suffocating Patriots defense.  Look for the Patriots to win by as many points as they feel like in this game as their scout team in practice will put up more of a fight than the Bills will this week.

Tom Brady has been outstanding this season for the New England Patriots

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by dawgpounded on Friday 21 September 2007 at 11:34 am

Looking at the Patriots on paper before the season started you had to think the offense would be awesome.  And that they have been as they are averaging 38 points per game and 419 yards per game.  Tom Brady has been a big part of that with his best collection of wide receivers that he has ever played with.  Brady has completed 47 of 59 passes (79.7%) for 576 yards with 6 TD passes and 1 interception (134.2 QB Rating).  Look for Brady to have a career season as the Patriots are also averaging 139.0 yards rushing per game so they can’t just focus on the passing game of the Patriots making them even more deadly.

The New England Patriots sign QB David Greene

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page by dawgpounded on Thursday 20 September 2007 at 4:51 pm

The Patriots have signed 3rd year QB David Greene and they have placed him on the practice squad.  The lefty was a 3rd round pick of the Seahawks in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Georgia.  Greene has talent but he will likely be the #4 QB on the Patriots totem pole.

The NFL comes down hard on the New England Patriots

Blogged under Big Pats News,Bloglockers,Front Page by dawgpounded on Tuesday 18 September 2007 at 4:48 pm

The Patriots have been fined $250,000 bucks and they will lose a first round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft if they make the playoffs.  If they don’t make the playoffs they will lose a 2nd and 3rd round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.  The NFL has also fined Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick $500,000.  The fines came down as a result of Eric Mangini (crying like the punk that he is) ratting out his old boss because the Patriots were filming the Jets defensive signals coming in from the sidelines.  I’m sure every team in the NFL bends the rules a little bit and if Eric Mangini feels so bad about it maybe he should return his Super Bowl Rings that he earned in New England.  What a sore loser that he is.

New England Patriots 38, San Diego Chargers 14

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by dawgpounded on Monday 17 September 2007 at 8:17 am

The New England Patriots had a lot to prove last night after the rough week off the field they had.  They also had to deal with the revenge minded Chargers but they made it look really easy.  The Patriots held onto the football for 35:46 of the football game by running the ball and completing short passes.  Tom Brady completed 25 of 31 passes for 279 yards with 3 TD passes and 1 interception.  Laurence Maroney (15 car, 77 yards, 5.1 ypc) and Sammy Morris (10 car, 51 yards, TD) split up the rushing duties for the Patriots and they were running hard.  Randy Moss had another stellar game as he caught 8 passes for 105 yards (13.1 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  Wes Welker (8 rec, 91 yards) and TE Ben Watson (5 rec, 49 yards, TD) also added firepower to the passing game.  The Patriots finished with 144 yards rushing on 32 carries (4.5 ypc) and they also completed 25 of 31 passes for 263 yards.

The defense played an outstanding game as they were frustrating the Chargers offense the whole game.  OLB Roosevelt Colvin had an outstanding game with 5 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 interception.  MLB Adalius Thomas also was outstanding with 3 tackles and a 65-yard interception return for a TD.  The Patriots held the Chargers to 52 yards rushing on 20 carries (2.6 ypc).  The Chargers also completed 19 of 30 passes for 149 yards.

New England Patriots vs. San Diego Chargers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 14 September 2007 at 10:39 am
Both of these football teams got off to good starts to the 2007 football season.  The Chargers disposed of the Bears 14-3 at home and the Patriots beat up on the Jets 38-14 in New Jersey.  The Chargers have likely had this game circled on their calendars the day the NFL schedule came out.  The Chargers were very upset at how the Patriots were acting on there football field after defeating them 27-24 last January.  It was a game that cost head coach Marty Schottenheimer his job despite going 14-2 last season.

It will be interesting to see how the Patriots play on offense without knowing the defensive calls of the Chargers before the play.  It looked like they knew whatever the Jets were going to do last week because of video cameras watching the Jets defensive coaches signal in formations and plays.  Still, Tom Brady was spectacular as he had all day to throw the football and he wasn’t even sacked once.  He completed 22 of 28 (78.6%) of his passes for 297 yards with 3 TDs and 0 INTs (146.6 QB Rating).  The Chargers will bring heat from the edges as OLBs Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips will try to get to Tom Brady.  The Chargers better hope they can rattle Brady a little bit because he has the weapons on offense to burn the Chargers corners if he has time to throw the ball.  WR Randy Moss looked like he went back 5 years in a time machine as he caught 9 passes for 183 yards (20.3 avg) with a long TD.  Wes Welker and Donte’ Stallworth will also put big time pressure on the secondary of the Chargers.  Also, look for the Patriots to challenge MLBs Stephen Cooper and Matt Wilhelm in the running game.  Both of them had outstanding games against the Bears but the Patriots have a much better offense than they do.  2nd year running back Laurence Maroney and veteran Sammy Morris will likely share the running load.

The Chargers will likely ride the horses that get them in the win column on offense against the Patriots and those guys are RB LaDainian Tomlinson, QB Philip Rivers and TE Antonio Gates.  The Patriots have questions in the secondary so don’t be surprised if the Chargers come out of the locker room throwing the football against the Patriots.  Afterall, the Jets completed 67.7% of their passes against the Patriots last week and they tossed 2 TDs so it’s worth a chance.  To do that though the Chargers need WR Vincent Jackson to hold onto the football as he dropped an easy TD last week against the Bears.  Gates will cause a huge matchup problem for the Patriots’ safeties so look for Rivers to be looking for him often.  Don’t think for a minute that the Chargers won’t run the football as LaDainian Tomlinson is still the best running back in the NFL despite his rough week against the Bears.  It will be fun to watch the Patriots linebackers trying to keep up with LT in both the running game and the passing game.

PREDICTION:  These teams are so evenly matched in terms of talent on the field that the tiebreaker will probably be at head coach and quarterback.  With that in mind I like the Patriots to win a close, exciting football game.

New England Patriots 38, New York Jets 14

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by dawgpounded on Sunday 9 September 2007 at 11:27 pm

The Patriots basically whipped the Jets ass on Sunday!  QB Tom Brady appears to like his new toys as he completed 22 of 28 passes for 297 yards with 2 TD passes.  Laurence Maroney (20 car, 72 yards) and Sammy Morris (11 car, 54 yards) both added ground support for Brady.  WR Randy Moss was outstanding as he caught 9 passes for 183 yards (20.3 avg) with 1 TD grab.  New receiver Wes Welker also had a good game with 6 catches for 61 yards (10.2 avg) with 1 TD reception.  TE Ben Watson and fullback Heath Evans also each caught a TD pass.  The Patriots finished with 134 yards rushing on 37 carries (3.6 ypc) and they completed 22 of 28 passes for 297 yards.

The Patriots defense was also outstanding against the Jets.  OLB Mike Vrabel was outstanding with 7 tackles and 2.5 sacks.  DE Jarvis Green also had a good game with 6 tackles and 2 sacks.  CB Ellis Hobbs was all over the football field for the Patriots as he finished with 6 tackles.  He also returned 3 kickoffs for 156 yards (52.0 avg) including a new NFL record 108 yard TD return.  The Patriots held the Jets to 60 yards rushing on 19 carries (3.2 ypc).  The Jets also completed 21 of 31 passes for 167 yards.

The over/under for New England Patriots wins is 11.5 for 2007

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,If I was going to bet the farm.....,Vegas Lines by dawgpounded on Saturday 8 September 2007 at 8:30 pm

This could be the best version of the Patriots to date so I would bet on the over.  By doing so I think the Patriots will win at least 12 games and after looking at the schedule I think they will have no problem winning that many games as long as Tom Brady stays healthy.  He will have his best receiving corps ever to throw to and 2nd year running back Laurence Maroney is ready to explode.  Look for the Patriots defense to be especially nasty this season.  Take the over and watch the wins roll in.
