The Patriots have traded 27-year old DT LeKevin Smith and a 7th round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft to the Broncos for a fifth round pick in the 2010 Draft.  Smith played in 15 games (0 starts) for the Patriots last season and he made 14 tackles.  In three seasons with the Patriots, Smith played in 41 games (0 starts) and he made 18 tackles.  This was a good move for the Patriots as Smith isn’t much of a player.

The New England Patriots cut CB Mike Richardson

The Patriots have cut 25-year old CB Mike Richardson.  Richardson played in 10 games as a rookie last season for the Patriots and he made 17 tackles.  The Patriots are really deep at CB so they won’t likely miss Richardson much.

The Patriots have signed 25-year old running back Chris Taylor.  Taylor played in 3 games (0 starts) for the Texans last season and he carried the ball 14 times for 37 yards (2.6 ypc).  He has now played in 7 games (0 starts) in his two year NFL career and he has carried the ball 42 times for 160 yards (3.8 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He has also caught 3 passes for 40 yards (13.3 avg) in his career.  Taylor is a solid player but he’s injury prone and the Patriots are deep at RB so he will likely have a hard time making the team.

New England Patriots 27, Philadelphia Eagles 25

The Patriots rushed out to a 21-6 lead in the first half before having to fight the Eagles tooth and nail to win this game.  Tom Brady looked very sharp in his first game in almost a year completing 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 interception.  Kevin O’Connell completed his only pass attempt for 6 yards while Andrew Walter completed 5 of 9 passes for 62 yards.  Sammy Morris was the workhorse on the ground in this game for the Patriots leading them with 45 yards on 12 carries (3.8 ypc).  He also caught a pass for 14 yards.  Randy Moss led the Patriots in receiving yards in this game with 54 on 3 catches (18.0 avg).  Rookie 7th round pick Julian Edelman was the standout in this game for the Patriots catching 5 passes for 37 yards (7.4 avg) and returning a punt 75 yards for a TD.  The Patriots only had 257 total yards on offense in this game but just getting Tom Brady back into the swing of things was a huge positive for them.

The defense did not play too well for the Patriots in this game in the second half.  The Eagles rolled up 420 yards in this game including 304 in the air.  LB Jared Mayo and S Patrick Chung led the way in this game for the Patriots with 5 tackles each.

The New England Patriots acquire OLB/DE Derrick Burgess from the Raiders

The Patriots have acquired 31-year old OLB/DE Derrick Burgess from the Raiders for a 3rd and 5th round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.  Burgess played in 10 games for the Raiders last season and he made 24 tackles, defensed 2 passes, had 3.5 sacks and he forced 1 fumble.  He has now played in 85 games over his seven year NFL career and he has made 227 tackles, has defensed 7 passes, had 47 sacks and he has forced 5 fumbles.  This is exactly the kind of player the Patriots love and this will likely wind up being a good trade for them.
