The New England Patriots sign Marques Murrell

The Patriots have signed 24-year old linebacker Marques Murrell.  Murrell played in 10 games for the Jets last season and he had 12 tackles and he forced 1 fumble.  In his two years in the NFL, Murrell has played in 22 games in which he has 21 tackles and 2 forced fumbles.  The price was right for the Patriots to take another player off the rival Jets.  Murrell will provide depth at linebacker and on special teams for the Patriots in 2010.

The New England Patriots sign David Patten

The Patriots have signed 35-year old WR David Patten to a 1-year deal.  Patten did not play last season.  He has played in 147 games in his NFL career and he has caught 324 passes for 4,715 yards (14.6 avg) with 24 TD grabs.  Patten played from 2001-2004 with the Patriots.  In those 4 years, Patten played in 54 games in which he caught 165 passes for 2,513 yards (15.2 avg) with 16 TD grabs.  Patten appears to be in the twilight of his career but I don’t see any problem in the Patriots giving him another chance.

Junior Seau officially back with New England Patriots

The 40-year-old linebacker Junior Seau has officially signed with the New England Patriots after a few weeks of speculation that he would return to his former club.  Seau has stated he is not sure what his role will be, but that he trusts head coach Bill Belichick and he knows that the savvy coach has a plan for him.  I don’t know how effective Seau can be at 40 years-old, but the 12-time pro-bowler will at the very least provide some veteran leadership to a younger looking Patriots defense this year.  DL Terdell Sands was released to make room for Seau.

The New England Patriots sign DT Terdell Sands

The Patriots have signed 29-year old DT Terdell Sands.  Sands played in 16 games for the Raiders last season and he made 29 tackles, defensed 2 passes and he had 2 sacks.  He has now played in 76 games in his NFL career and he has made 129 tackles, has defensed 10 passes, has 4 sacks and he has picked off 1 pass.  Sands adds another big body to help out against the run for the D.  The Patriots released OLB Prescott Burgess just one week after acquiring him from the Ravens.  He must have made quite a good first impression.

The New England Patriots sign RB Chris Taylor

Blogged under Free Agent Additions, Bloglockers, Front Page, Big Pats News, General by admin on Monday 24 August 2009 at 8:38 pm

The Patriots have signed 25-year old running back Chris Taylor.  Taylor played in 3 games (0 starts) for the Texans last season and he carried the ball 14 times for 37 yards (2.6 ypc).  He has now played in 7 games (0 starts) in his two year NFL career and he has carried the ball 42 times for 160 yards (3.8 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He has also caught 3 passes for 40 yards (13.3 avg) in his career.  Taylor is a solid player but he’s injury prone and the Patriots are deep at RB so he will likely have a hard time making the team.
