The New England Patriots sign RB Joseph Addai

The Patriots have signed 29-year old RB Joseph Addai. Addai played in 12 games for the Colts last year and he carried the ball 118 times for 433 yards (3.7 ypc) with 1 TD grab. He also caught 15 passes for 93 yards (6.2 avg) last year. Addai has now played in 78 games in his first six years in the NFL and he has carried the ball 1,095 times for 4,453 yards (4.1 ypc) with 39 TD runs. He has also caught 191 passes for 1,448 yards (7.6 avg) with 9 TD grabs in his NFL career. This was an outstanding pickup for the Patriots as Addai will help them cushion the blow of losing BenJarvus Green-Ellis to the Bengals.

The New England Patriots re-sign DT Gerard Warren

The Patriots have re-signed 33-year old DT Gerard Warren. Warren played in 12 games for the Patriots last year and he had 12 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery and 1 tackle for a loss. He has played in 28 games in his first two years with the Patriots and he has 40 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 2 tackles for a loss. This was a good depth move for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots release WR Tiquan Underwood

The Patriots have released 25-year old WR Tiquan Underwood. Underwood played in 6 games for the Patriots last year and he caught 3 passes for 30 yards (10.0 avg). He has now played in 19 games in his first three years in the NFL and he has caught 11 passes for 141 yards (12.8 avg). Underwood will likely hook on with a new team for 2012, but the Patriots aren’t going to miss him one bit moving forward.

The Patriots have signed 31-year old WR Jabar Gaffney to a 2-year deal. Gaffney played in all 16 games for the Redskins last year and he caught 68 passes for 947 yards (13.9 avg) with 5 TD grabs. He has now played in 155 games in his first 10 years in the NFL and he has caught 443 passes for 5,622 yards (12.7 avg) with 24 TD grabs. Gaffney played for the Patriots from 2006-08. In his three years with the Patriots, Gaffney caught 85 passes for 1,059 yards (12.5 avg) with 8 TD grabs. This was another solid signing for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots picked undrafted rookie DT Marcus Fortson out of Miami (FL). Forston is 6’3″, 305 pounds. He has been a rock solid player when healthy, but that wasn’t too often in college. He has solid talent overall as a DT, but he’s going to need coached up as he didn’t play a whole lot in college. Forston played in 3 games (all starts) for the Hurricanes last year and he had 5 tackles, 1 tacle for a loss, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble. He played in 31 games (16 starts) in his three years at Miami (FL) and he finished up with 60 tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss, 7 sacks, 1 batted ball and 1 fumble recovery.

The New England Patriots selected WR Jeremy Ebert out of Northwestern with the 235th overall pick (7th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Ebert is 5’10″, 194 pounds and he runs a 4.6 40. Ebert is a quick guy who doesn’t mind working over the middle of the field. He is also an ex-QB, as he was a highly effective passer and runner in high school. Belichick seems to love these kinds of guys. Ebert played in 13 games for Northwestern last year and he caught 75 passes for 1,060 yards (14.1 avg) with 11 TD grabs. He played in 52 games in his four years at Northwestern and he caught 173 passes for 2,400 yards (13.9 avg) with 21 TD grabs. This was a solid pick so late in the draft for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots picked CB Alfonzo Dennard in the 7th round

The New England Patriots selected CB Alfonzo Dennard out of Nebraska with the 224th overall pick (7th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Dennard is 5’10″, 204 pounds and he runs a 4.5 40. Dennard is very aggressive and physical on the field. He is a pretty solid cover corner but he does have issues with bigger WRs at times. Dennard could be a little more consistent in his tackling. Dennard played in 10 games (all starts) at Nebraska last year and he had 31 tackles. Dennard played in 48 games (32 starts) in his four years with the Cornhuskers in which he had 97 tackles, 15 passes broken up, 4 interceptions and 1 forced fumble. The Patriots got a steal with this pick if Dennard behaves, as his stock dropped big time due to a marijuana arrest last April. Many “experts” had Dennard being picked in the 2nd or 3rd round.

The New England Patriots have selected CB Nate Ebner out of Ohio State with the 197th overall pick (6th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Ebner is 6’0″, 202 pounds and he runs a 4.54 40. The Patriots picked Ebner to run down the field like a mad man on special teams. He didn’t play football until he got to college as he played Rugby in high school. Ebner played in 12 games at Ohio State last year and he had 11 tackles, 1 pass broken up and 1 interception. He played in 36 games in his three years at Ohio State and he had only 30 tackles, 1 pass broken up and 1 interception.

The New England Patriots picked DE Jake Bequette in the 3rd round

The New England Patriots selected DE Jake Bequette out of Arkansas with the 90th overall pick (3rd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Bequette is 6’4″, 264 pounds and he runs a 4.68 40. Bequette plays at full speed all of the time and he’s a very solid pass rusher. Double teams usually nullify him, so he’s got some work to do in order to get better. He played in 10 games (all starts) at Arkansas last year and he had 28 tackles, 10.5 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks, 1 batted ball and 5 forced fumbles. Bequette played in 48 games (42 starts) in his four years at Arkansas and he had 151 tackles, 31.5 tackles for a loss, 22 sacks, 1 batted down ball, 9 forced fumbles and 4 fumble recoveries. The Patriots came into this draft in need of pass rushers and they have found a couple of them in DEs Chandler Jones and Jake Bequette.

The New England Patriots picked safety Tavon Wilson in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft

The Patriots selected safety Tavon Wilson out of Illinois with the 48th overall pick (2nd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. This was a shocker as not many experts had Wilson even getting drafted, let alone going in the second round. Wilson played in 13 games for Illinois last year and he had 81 tackles, 1 sack, 6.5 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 6 passes defensed and 1 interception. He played in 50 games in his four years with the Illini and he had 214 tackles, 1 sack, 12 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble, 4 fumble recoveries, 22 passes defensed and 3 interceptions. Wilson appears to be one of the biggest reaches in recent memory, but the Patriots are weak at safety, so he’s going to get the chance to prove all of the naysayers wrong.
